How fast can I get a prototype 3D printed?
Most prototypes are completed in 3-7 days once a maker accepts the job, and rush work can turn around in 1-2 days. Quotes themselves usually arrive within about 4 hours of posting. The slow step is rarely printing; it is the CAD modelling on a first version.
Do I need CAD files to get a prototype printed?
No. An STL or 3MF exported from CAD is what a printer needs, but a dimensioned sketch, a photo of a comparable product, or a written description is enough to get a quote. Somebody still has to build the CAD model from it, and that modelling work is most of what you pay for on a first prototype.
Can you make functional prototypes, not just visual models?
Yes. 3D printing produces working prototypes with moving parts, threads and snap-fits. Choose the material for the job: PETG, ABS or nylon for parts under load, PLA or resin for appearance models. Be careful with fatigue testing, because FDM parts are weaker between layers than along them.
Do I need a patent before I get a prototype made?
No, and the US Patent and Trademark Office does not require a physical model with an application. What matters is disclosure. The US gives a one-year grace period after your own public disclosure, but most other countries apply absolute novelty, so a public reveal before filing can end your rights abroad. Use a written NDA, or file first.
Is my design protected when I post it?
You can post a project with a private description, review bids before revealing details, and require an NDA as a condition of the job. You keep every file involved, and payment sits in escrow until you have approved photos of the finished part. Hiring one maker under an NDA is a controlled disclosure; posting your CAD file publicly is not.
